Ovaries Flashcards
What are the ovaries?
small almond shaped glands
-produce female gametes and sex hormones
How are the ovaries suspended?
by mesovarium of broad lig. near lateral pelvic walls
What are prepubertal ovaries covered by?
smooth germinal epithelium
What postpubertal ovaries like?
become progressively distorted and scarred from ovulation
- ovulation releases oocyte directly into peritoneal cavity
- infundibulum of uterine tube captures oocyte and brings it into ampulla
What does the suspensory lig. do?
connects distal end of ovary to lateral wall of pelvis
What does the suspensory lig. contain?
ovarian blood vessels, lymphatics and nerves
What is the ovarian lig.?
connects proximal end of ovary to uterus
-located within mesovarium
What is the arterial supply to the ovary?
Ovarian a.
- originates from abdominal aorta and enters ovary after passing through the suspensory lig. of ovary
- supplies tubal branches and anastomoses with uterine a.
What is the venous drainage of the ovary?
- Pampiniform plexus (forms in broad lig. near ovary and uterine tube)
- single ovarian v. drains this plexus and follows ovarian a. to abdomen
Where does the R ovarian v. drain?
to IVC
Where does the L ovarian v. drain?
L renal v.
lymphatic drainage of ovary?
efferent lymphatics drain to lumbar lymph nodes
Autonomics to ovary?
via ovarian plexus which follow ovarian a.
Sympathetics and parasympathetics to ovary?
symp- T11-L1
para- pelvic splanchnic n.
What doe the innervations do to the ovary?
regulates vascular diameter but otherwise unknown
