What is the vestibule of the vagina?
cleft between the Labia Minora
Where is the vagina located?
posterior to urethra/urinary bladder and anterior to rectum
The walls of the vagina are normally collapsed and open up where?
Superiorly where cervix holds walls apart
What is the vaginal fornix?
Superior recess surrounding uterine cervix and is divided into anterior, lateral, and posterior regions.
Which region of the vaginal fornix is the deepest part?
the posterior fornix and is associated with the rectouterine pouch
What four muscles compress the vagina and act like a sphincter?
Pubovaginalis m.
External urethral sphincter
Urethrovaginal sphincter
Bulbospongiosus m.
What is the function of the vagina?
- Excretory duct for menstrual fluid
- Receive penis and semen during sexual intercourse
- Inferior portion of birth canal
What arteries supply the vagina? which portion?
uterine a. (superior vagina)
vaginal a. (middle vagina)
internal pudendal a. (inferior vagina)
What is the venous drainage for the vagina and where does it go to?
Vaginal venous plexus drains to internal iliac v.
What is the lymphatic drainage for the superior portion of the vagina?
Drains to internal /external iliac lymph nodes
What is the lymphatic drainage for the middle portion of the vagina?
Drains to internal iliac lymph nodes
What is the lymphatic drainage for the inferior portion of the vagina?
Drains to the sacral, common iliac and superficial inguinal lymph nodes
What is the innervation of the superior 80% of the vagina and what is it an extension off?
Uterovaginal plexus (travels with the uterine a.) and is an extension of inferior hypogastric plexus
Sympathetics to the vagina are supplied via
lumbar splanchnic n.
Parasympathetics to the vagina via
pelvic splanchnic n.
What doe the visceral afferents of the vaginal accompany and what is it responsible for?
accompany pelvic splanchnic n. back to S2-S4
- Responsive only to distension ini upper 80% of vagina
What is the somatic innervation via?
Deep perineal n. (branch of pudendal n.)
What portion of the vagina does the Deep perineal n. provide somatic innervation and what is it responsive to?
Only to lower 20% of vagina and responsive to touch and temperature
