Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome Flashcards
What is it?
A complication seen in some forms of infertility treatment (rarely occurs sporadically)
- thought that the presence of multiple luteinized cysts within the ovaries results in high levels of not only oestrogen sand progesterone but also vasoactive substances e.g VEGF - results in increased membrane permeability and loss of fluid into intravascular compartment
Following what treatment is it more likely to be seen following?
Gonadotropin or hCG treatment
Can be seen with clomifene
What symptoms are associated with mild disease?
Abdominal pain
Abdominal bloating
What symptoms are associated with moderate disease?
Abdominal pain
Abdominal bloating
Nausea and vomiting
US evidence of ascites
What symptoms are associated with severe disease?
Same as for moderate plus:
Oliguria
Haematocrit >45%
Hypoproteinaemia
What signifies critical disease?
Thromboembolism
ARD
Anuria
Tense ascites
