Different cut off values than in non pregnant women and varies according to trimester
First trimester: Hb <110
Second/third: Hb<105
Postpartum: Hb<100

When are pregnant women screened for anaemia?
A
Booking visit and at 28 weeks

How is anaemia managed?
A
For normocytic/microcytic anaemia: a trial of oral iron tablets = first step
Further investigations if no rise in Hb after 2 weeks

Parenteral iron only indicated if…
A
Oral iron not tolerated, absorbed or patient not compliant or they are near term and insufficient time for oral iron to be effective
