Outline 15: Muscles Of The Face Flashcards
What is another name for chewing?
Mastication
Muscles of face have how many phases?
3
What are the names of 3 phases of facial muscles?
Oral phase
Pharyngeal phase
Esophageal phase
What happens during oral phase?
…. Part of stomach starts to get ready to digest
…. We salivate getting ready to digest
… Part of swallowing
What happens if someone does not have good oral phase?
- Food gets stuck, food leakage,
- Possible indication that sensory not doing well
- if sensory not doing well for swallowing….possible that larynx will not move up and down
- wont close in sphincter action and possible. Leakage into trachea
What happens in pharyngeal phase?
Tongue goes backwards
Propels bloods backward
Pharynx wall opens and closes and esophagus opens
What happens in esophageal phase?
Swallow enters esophagus….. Not to concerned after this point for speech
What is the biological function of the mandible?
Chewing
What are the movements of mandible?
Elevation Depression Laterization Protrusion Retraction
Are movements of mandible important for biting?
Yes
Does the jaw move to alter shape of oral phase?
Yes
Does jaw movement change resonance which shapes sounds?
Yes
How many muscles of mastication are there?
7
There are 3 elevator muscles of mastication…. Name them…
Temporalis
Masseter
Medial Pterygoid
Facts about temporalis…..
- goes over a lot of temporal bone
- elevates coronoid process
- wiggle ears because of this muscle
- fan shaped
- arises from temporal fascia (temple), than spreads anteriorly, superiorly, posteriorly
- looking at temporal bone.. , zygomatic process sticks out, so temporal process of zygomatic bone together they form an archway that lets muscles go underneath and that’s what temporalis does
Facts about Masseter…
Strongest and biggest elevator muscle for chewing
Masseter inserts into coronoid process
What is the biological function of the muscles of the face?
Chewing!!
Facts about medial Pterygoid muscle for mastication…..
- Most important muscle for speech
- arise from medial process of Pterygoid plate of sphenoid lower part bone
- fibers course posteriorly and inferiorly to insert on inside of Ramus of mandible
- deep to Masseter muscle; runs same course except one is on inside and one on outside
Does Pterygoid muscle and Masseter muscle form a cradle for the jaw?
Yes
There are 4 depressor muscles for mastication… Name them…..
Lateral Pterygoid
Mylohyloid
Geniohyoid
Anterior belly of digastricus
Facts about lateral Pterygoid (depressor for mastication)…..
- Has 2 heads; superior head that arises from greater wing of sphenoid bone
- Courses posteriorly to insert on Condyloid process of mandible
- Action of lateral Pterygoid is going to pull mandible downward
