Outcome 6 - Placement of GI restorations Flashcards
What type of formats is glass ionomer materials supplied in?
Both powder & liquid formats
All conventional glass ionomer materials contain the following essential components:
-an ionic polymer which is a polycarboxylic acid
-a fluoroaluminosilicate (FAS) glass powder
-water
-acrylic acid
(combined in both powder & liquid formats)
The components of the Vitrabond (used at SAIT) powder & liquid are:
Powder - composed of a radiopaque, fluoroaluminosilicate glass. It also contains microencapsulated potassium persulfate and ascorbic acid. The powder contains small amounts of pigments to provide shades for various dentitions and a blue shade, designed specificically for core buildups.
Liquid - a light-sensitive, aqueous solution of a polycarboxylic acid.
Advantage of Glass Ionomer Restorative Material?
contains fluoride that will release into adjacent tooth structure over time to strengthen the enamel and dentin surrounding the restoration. This will make the enamel and dentin less susceptible to reccurent caries. This material also has the ability to bond to tooth struture, as the cement is attracted to the fluid within the dentinal tubules.
What type of restorations is Glass Ionomer material often used for?
Often used in primary teeth and class V situtations where the acid etch used in composites may weaken the thin enamel layer.
- ideal for use in root caries or reduced salivary flow situations and in core buildups where there is not enough natural tooth structure to retain a full crown.
Disadvantage of Glass Ionomer Restorative Material?
The glass inomer restorative material is actually cement, so it does not reflect light in the same way as natrual tooth strucutre. It is available in a variety of shades but remains esthetically inferior to composite resin and other esthetic restorative materials.
What should be on the dentist cart for a Glass Ionomer Restorative procedure?
-air water syringe
-high speed handpiece with a fissure type bur
-slow speed handpiece with a latch type round bur
-Bur block with inverted cone latch type bur, friction grip finishing burs (football & flame shape)
-mandrel for finishing discs
-finishing disc (medium/find grit)
What hand cutting instruments are required for a GI restorative procedure?
-spoon excavator
-enamel hoe
-angle former
What condensing instrument is required for a GI restorative procedure?
Plastic filling instrument (PFI)/composite placement instrument
What type of glass ionomer materials/instruments are involved in a GI restorative procedure?
-GI materials
-material kit
-fillable carpule
-composite dispenser gun
-paper pad
-small mixing spatula
Is bite registration requried for a Class V restoration?
NO - because it is on the cervical 1/3 of tooth
