Outcome 1 - Basic Principles, Materials, Assisting Methods Flashcards
What are the 4 Basic Principles of four-handed dentistry?
- Operating in a Seated Position
- Employing the Skills of Trained Auxilliaries
- Organizing Every Component of the Practice
- Simplifying All Tasks as Much as Possible
What are the 4 processes a dental team can undertake to make dentistry less difficult?
Rearrangement - of instruments/materials essential to the procedure close to team, and for patient scheduling for maximum efficiency
Elimination - Analysis of daily routines, equipment, ect to see what can be eliminated for better flow
Combination - one instrument, multiple uses
Simplification - simplify steps in a smooth sequence to minimize delays
When exchanging an instrument that will be held in pen grasp, the assistant…
holds the instrument with her left hand, between the thumbs and 2 fingers well back on the instrument. The cutting edge of the instrument will face the prepared tooth and moves parallel to the operators hand
What type of transfer technique is used for instruments held in a Palm Grasp?
A two-handed transfer technique
What type of instruments is a Palm Grasp used for?
instruments with two handles such as forceps or hinged instruments like scissors
How does an assistant transfer an instrument that is held using a Palm Thumb grasp?
The assistant holds a palm thumb instrument for transfer in the left hand with the index finger and thumb on the working end, and the handle supported by the next two fingers.
Where does instrument transfer occur?
In the transfer zone, below the patients chin
Criteria used when assessing which material to use in restorative dentistry
-Biocompatibility - non-toxic, non-irritating
-Mechanically Stable & Durable
-Resistant to Corrosion and Chemicals
-Dimensionally Stable
-Minimal Thermal & Electrical Conductivity
-Esthetic
-Easy to Manipulate
-Adhesion to Tooth Tissues
-Tasteless and Odorless
-Easy to Repair and Clean
-Cost Effective
What does Flow mean with rescpect to properties of dental materials?
The dental material must be pliable enough to be placed in the preparation, filling in where tooth structure was removed
What does Adhesion mean with respect to properties dental materials?
The abilitiy of a dental material to adhere to tooth structure prevents microleakage from occuring
What is the wetting property of a dental material?
The ability of a liquid to flow over the surface
What is the viscosity property of a dental material?
is the property of a liquid that causes it to not flow easily
What are surface characteristics of a dental material?
when a liquid flows more easily on a rough surface than on a very smooth surface
What is the film thickness property of a dental material?
in general, the thinner the film, the stronger the adhesive junction
What does Retention mean?
The ability to hold two things firmly together when they will not adhere to each other naturally
