Outcome 2- Polymers Flashcards
LDPE
Low density Polymer- High number of side branches. makes them soft
HDPE
High density Polyer- Low number of side branches. makes them hard and rigid
Thermosetting polymer
When there are a lot of Cross links. making it hard and impossible to mould back. chars when heated
Thermoplastic Polymer
Low amount of Cross links. which makes them soft and able to be remoulded when heated.
Isotatic
When side branches are arranged on the same side of a linear polymer making them rigid and tough
Atoctic
Side branches occur at irregular points on both side of the chain of linear polymers. makes them soft and waxy with little potential of use.
Writting an addition polymer Etc Butene
C-C=C-C
Propane intervals
c-c-c | c-c-c | c-c-c
General structural model for polymer materials and the forces existing between chains
Dispersion forces
What is a plasticiser?
Plasticsers go in-between carbon chains and pull them apart from each other making the polymer more flexible.
Advantages and disadvantages of the use of polymers
Advantages
- Can be modelled into any shape
- Dont corrode
- Are good insulators of electricity
Disadvantages
- Takes up a long time to decompose
- Takes up space in landfill
- Cause pollutions
