Outcome 1- Intramolecular bonding: Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
Metals and non metals reacting together to form an ionic lattice. The electrons lost by the metals can be taken up the more electronegative non metals. The strong force of attraction between postive and negative is called an Electrostatic Attraction.
2
Q
What are the physical properties associated with ionic compounds?
A
Ionic Compounds are
- Hard solids due to their three dimensional arrangement of ions
- Have High melting and boiling since a lot of energy is needed to remove ions
- Do not conduct Electricity in Solid state due to the ions being unable to move but can conduct in aqueous or molten
- Brittle since the Distortion of the lattice cause the positive and negative ions to repulse against their identical charges
3
Q
Why do ionic bonds dissolve in water and are aqueous in molten states
A
Because intermolecular bonding occurs between water on the ionic compound. the negative Oxygen bonds with the postive Metal and the Positive Hydrogen bonds with the non metal. This allows the ions to freely from the lattice making it able to conduct electricty
