What is otosclerosis
Remodelling of the small bones in the middle ear, leading to conductive hearing loss
Cause of otosclerosis
Combination of environmental and genetic factors. Autosomal dominant pattern however no specific mutations.
Who is otosclerosis more common in
Women
Age of presentation of otosclerosis
Before age of 40
Presentation of otosclerosis
Hearing loss, tinnitus, unilateral or bilateral
What sounds does otosclerosis affect most
Lower-pitched sounds, which is opposite to presbycusis
Examinaiton in otosclerosis
Otoscopy normal. Weber’s normal if bilateral and Rinne’s test shows conductive hearing loss.
Management of otosclerosis
Conservative with the use of hearing aids.
Surgical - stapedectomy or stapedotomy
Investigations of otosclerosis
Audiometry, tympanometry show reduced admittance, high resolution CT scans.
