What is layngeal papillomatosis
Benign wart like tumours on the inside of the voice box/larynx
Cause of laryngeal papillomatosis
HPV
What is recurrent respiratory papillomatosis
When the tumours grow back and obstruct the airway
Symptoms of laryngeal papillomatosis
Chronic cough, dysphagia, SOB, sleep apnoea
Treatment of laryngeal papillomatosis
Laser surgery to remove them
Complications of laryngeal papillomatosis
Vocal cord lesions, blocked airways
What is laryngomalacia
‘Soft larynx’ where the laryngeal tissues above vocal cords are floppy
What happens during inspiration in children with laryngomalacia
Tissues above the vocal cords fall in towards the airway and cause partial obstruction
Symptoms of laryngomalacia
Stridor, louder with exertion, feeding or crying
Treatment of laryngomalacia
70% resolve without intervention by 1 year, and 90% by 2 years.
Types of laryngeal injuries
Laryngeal fracture, tracheal fracture, penetrating injuries, arytenoid dislocation, cricotracheal separation, recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis
