What is menieres disease
Long-term inner ear disorder that causes recurrent attacks of vertigo

Symptoms of menieres disease
Vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, fullness in the ear, unexplained falls, imbalance, spontaneous nystagmus. Unilateral
Typical age of patient
40-50 years old
Vertigo episodes
Last for around 20 minutes to several hours before settling. These episodes can come in clusters over several weeks, followed by porlonged periods without vertigo symptoms.
Hearing loss in menieres disease
Typically fluctuates at first, associated with vertigo attacks, then gradually becomes more permanent. Senorineural hearing loss generally unilateral and affects low frequencies first
Diagnosis of menieres disease
Clinical based on signs and symptoms. Audiology assessment to evaluate hearing loss
Management of menieres disease
Managing symptoms during acute attack, prophylactic medication to reduce frequency of attacks.
Short term options for managing acute attacks
Prochlorperazine and antihistamines (cyclizine, cinnarizine, promethazine)
Prophylactic medication
Betahistine
