What is an acoustic neuroma
Benign tumours of the Schwann cells surrounding the auditory nerve that innervates the ear
What are bilateral acoustic neuromas associated with
Neurofibromatosis type 2
Presentation of acoustic neuroma
Age 40-60 years with gradual onset of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, unilateral tinnitus, dizziness or imbalance, sensation of fullness in the ear, can also be associated with facial nerve palsy
Diagnosis of acoustic neuroma
Audiometry is used to assess hearing loss. MRI or CT to establish diagnosis and featurse of tumour
Management options
Conservative - no symptoms or treatment inappropriate
Surgery to remove
Radiotherapy to reduce growth
Risks of treatment
Vestibulocochlear nerve injury with permanent hearing loss or dizziness.
Facial nerve injury with facial weakness
