Long legs extend beyond body margin
Copious dark cerumen is observed

- Short - Unsegmented - Large suckers

Complete life cycle in ear
PPP: 2-3 weeks
What is the site of infestation?
External Ear canal and adjacent areas
Describe the Pathogenesis
Kittens and puppies are easily infested - contact with dam
In cats - dry, waxy parchment like material in ears with large number of
mites
Common cause of otitis externa
Irritation
Large amounts of cerumen
- Along with mite debris and blood becomes thick, dark and dry
giving appearance of “coffee grounds”
- Discharge in dogs usually minimal
What are the clinical signs?
Shaking head
Scratching ears
Inflammation of ear canals
How do you diagnose?
Behavior of animal
Exudate in ear canal
Mites on slide
Mites in ear observed with otoscope
Observed on swabs of ear canal
How do you treat?
Topical acaricidal treatments
What is important about Otodectes cynotis?
