A
- Acute infection of the middle ear
- Most common at 6-12 months of age

- Viral (most common)
- RSV
- Rhinovirus
- Bacterial
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Eustachian tubes (in infants and young children)
- Short
- Horizontal
- Function poorly

- Erythematous, bulging tympanic membrane (pathognomic)

Management of otitis media
A
*Most cases resolve spontaneously*
- Analgesia
- Paracetamol/ibuprofen
- Antibiotics (amoxicillin)
- Marginally shorted duration of symptoms
- Delayed prescription may be useful (if child does not improve, take antibiotics in 2-3 days)
