Leo Sowerby biography

A

As a teen he studied piano with Calvin Lampert and Percy Grainger and was later educated at the American Conservatory in Chicago. In 1920 he won the American Prix de Rome and spent time at the American Academy in Rome. He joined faculty of the American Conservatory in Chicago, where he became chairman of Composition. Was organist and choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Church and received an honorary doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. He also received a Pulitzer Prize for his choral work, Canticle of the Sun.
