Other Flashcards
what is Boyle’s Law
at a constant temperature, the pressure of a given quantity of gas varies inversely with its volume - if you add more air in a container the pressure will increase, if you decrease the volume of the container the pressure will increase
if two spaces are connected air flows from where to where?
from the area of higher pressure to the area of lower pressure until they are equal
what is the default airflow in speech?
pulmonary egressive airflow aka breathing out
what are the three types of airflow?
laminar, turbulent, pulsing
what is laminar airflow?
all the air molecules are flowing in roughly the same direction at roughly the same velocity - quiet, calm
what is turbulent airflow?
due to the narrow passageway the air molecules move at different velocities in different directions - noisy, disorganized
what is pulsing airflow?
periodic alternation between a high and low rate of airflow - the vocal tract rapidly alternates between open and shut for example blowing a raspberry
what is the Bernoulli’s effect?
as the rate of airflow is increased, pressure perpendicular to the direction of flow is reduced - blowing a piece of paper
which words in English have a main stressed syllable?
lexical words (nouns, adjectives, verbs)
which words in English only have stress if they are being emphasized?`
function words (articles, prepositions, conjunctions, auxiliary words)
