What is often the cause?

What are the differentials if the pt also complains of fever, hearing loss, tootache, or dysphagia/odynophagia?

How is it generally managed?

A

➊ Most (50%) are non-otological, being referred pain from other sources, such as the throat and teeth

➋ • Fever - Otitis Externa/Media, Flu, Cold
• Hearing loss - Ear wax build up, Perforated ear drum
• Tootache - Dental abscess, Children teething
• Dysphagia/odynophagia - Sore throat, Tonsillitis

➌ • Analgesia
• Warm/Cold flannel to relieve pain
• Treat underlying cause
