➊ H. Influenzae B (Hib)
➋ • Drooling
• Stridor
• Sore throat
• Fever
• Dyphagia/odynophagia
➌ Can swell and completely obstruct airways within hrs
➍ Hib vaccine
Which investigations may be done?
How is it managed?
With management, what is important to do initially?
After the initial management, what are the options?
➊ • Don’t examine or upset the pt - may worsen the obstruction
• Lateral XR - Thumbprint sign
N.B. If pt epiglottitis is suspected, don’t wait for investigations, and instead treat straight away
➋ • Immediate referal to ENT and anaesthetics
• Secure airways
• IV Ceftriaxone
• Dexamethasone
N.B. Public health have to be notified
