Arthur Hildreth, DO
First chair of committee on legislation that lobbied hard in several states for independent boards of osteopathy, with full scope of medicine.
-Proponent of “pure” osteopathy.
J. Martin Littlejohn
Along with brothers, wanted to have ALL medical sciences and surgery in DO teaching. Went off to form their own college in Chicago (now CCOM)
-Said GYN purulence cases could not be treated by manipulation. Helped lead the Broad osteopaths.

Founded by the Littlejohns
S.L. Taylor
MD from university of Nebraska, and DO from here, and was a leader in calling for “broad osteopathy”. President of this school 1911-26, and chief of DMS General
-Tried to get more than manipulation, saying that appendicitis cannot be cured this way.
Lesion Osteopaths
Want to strictly have Osteopathy instead of drugs, immunizations etc. Still was on this side.
Broad Osteopaths
Wanted to have a broader scope of medical tools, including drugs. Also OB/Gyn should be included.
George Still, DO
Son of Summerfield still, who said treating Potts disease with manipulation is absurd. Helped lead the Broad osteopaths.
AOA
Began out of ASO grads in 1897. Battled for license in all states, promoted higher academic standards and research, and increased schooling.
When did the AOA school required 4 years of schooling?
1916, but not until 1920 fully instituted.
Louisa Burns DO
First full time researcher into the osteopathic lesions. Criticized today for not being very strict in research.
HIll-Burton act of 1946
Passed in tandem with the GI bill, but made all hospitals easier to build since allowed for funding. Big boon for DO hospitals.

Robert McNamara
Sec of def in Vietnam war. He ORDERED that DOs be accepted into the military.
Vietnam War’s effect on DO profession
MDs and DOs worked together for the first time, greatly increasing the two’s acceptance of one another.
Des Moines general hospital
Main teaching site for DMU students beginning in the 1930s lasting to 21st century.
