Charles Hartupee
DO who opened office in Des Moines. Graduated from ASO. He advertised in papers, but practiced illegally (got away with it).
Summerfield Still
Founded DMU (then SS still college of osteopathy). He was a primary doc and son of James still.
Abraham Flexner
Hired by the Carnegie foundation to evaluate the DO and MD schools. Did so in 1909, and damned every school in the nation (except John Hopkins and University of Michagan).
When did Flexner evaluate the schools?
- AMA agreed with him, AOA disagreed.
What were the clinic facilities like here at DMU during 1909?
Non-existent.
Still college hospital in DSM
World first DO hospital. (gone now due to fire in 1960s).
Des Moines Still college of osteopathy
Still university changed to DSM Still college of osteopathy in 1911, when it became a non-profit institution.
Simeon L. Taylor
College president of the new school in 1911. Made it a non-profit.
Des Moines General hospital
Main teaching site for DMSCO into the 21st century.
Thomas Vigorito, DO
Came to DMS to get a masters, but eventually became president of this institution in 1968. He was president when the college was flirting with teaching MD in coordination with DO degree. He got fired when he wanted this, even though he did not want to drop the DO.
J. Leonard Azneer, PhD
President after Thomas Vigorito (1971-1996). Moved school to here. 1981 DMU became true university, opened clinic in 73,
Judge Conger
Judge from Ohio who was well known. Suffered a stroke and did not get better until went to Kirksville MO. Offered to buy school from Still, but Still declined. He offered it to his nephew Summerfield, who agreed, and DMU was born.
