what is osteomyelitis?
infection of the bone and/or bone marrow
organisms that can cause osteomyelitis?
staph aureus pseudamonas e coli strep MARS
what abnormality in gait can osteomyelitis cause?
limp
why does osteomyelitis cause bone death?
it is pyogenic (pus producing)
what bones does it usually affect
long bones
where in the bone do you most commonly get it?
metaphysis
who gets osteomyelitis?
neonates
drug users
HIV
symptoms
acute illness with extreme pain over the affected bone
fever
erythema and swelling
unwillingness to move limb
what would you get on blood cultures?
increased WBC and ESR
x rays will be normal early on, what will they start to show after 2 weeks?
loss of density
new bone outlining the raised periosteum
treatment of osteomyelitis?
IV antibiotics (gentamicin and flucloxacillin)
