Osteology of IT fossa Flashcards
what structure create the temporal fossa
- superior and inferior temporal lines
- zygomatic arch –> temporal process of zygomatic bone, zygomatic process of temporal bone
what structures make up the temporomandibular joint
articulation between mandibular fossa (temporal bone) and head of the condyloid process of mandible
action/movements of the temporomandibular joint
- movement of the mouth
- elevation, depression, protrusion, retrusion, lateral movements
location of temporal fossa
- depressed side on the skull
- occupied primarily by upper portion of temporalis muscle
- superior to infratemporal fossa
location of infratemporal fossa
the space between the ramus of mandible, lateral pterygoid plate, maxilla, inferior surface of greater wing of sphenoid, mastoid and styloid process of temporal boen
what make up the borders of the infratemporal fossa
Anterior border –> posterior surface of maxilla
posterior border –> temporal bone, and mastoid and styloid processes of temporal bone
medial border –> lateral pterygoid plate of sphenoid
lateral border –> ramus and coronoid process of the mandible
superior border (Roof) –> part of greater wing of sphenoid and part of squamous part of the temporal bone
