Muscles of pelvic walls and floor Flashcards
purpose of pelvic diaphragm
support and give exit points for the bladder, rectum (and uterus)
landmark that marks the point between ilium and pubic bone (and relative location)
- iliopubic eminence
AIIS –> groove in bone –> eminence
what muscle travels in the groove between the AIIS and the iliopubic eminence
iliopsoas
hiatus in the muscular floor of pelvic diaphragm, what structures are they openings for
- urogenital hiatus –> urethra (and vagina)
- Anal hiatus
Muscles that make up walls of pelvic cavity
- obturator internus and associated fascia (also connects to tendinous arch of levator ani)
- Piriformis
what structures form the greater/lesser sciatic foramens
the SS and ST ligaments
pathway of obturator internus (origin to attachment)
- originates on inner aspect of cavity on bones that create the obturator foramen
- makes 90 degree turn to exit cavity at the lesser sciatic foramen
- attach to proximal femur
Pathway of piriformis (origin to attachment)
- originates on anterior aspect of sacrum
- exits pelvic cavity at greater sciatic foramen
- attaches to proximal femur
Piriformis attacment
intertrochanteric crest (tip of greater trochanter)
Obturator interus attachment
trochanteric fossa/medial aspect of greater trochanter
Muscles that make up the muscular floor of the pelvic cavity
- Levator ani
- Ischiococcygeus muscle
muscles that make up the levator ani
- puborectalis
- pubococcygeus
-iliococcygeus
proximal attachments of levator ani and ischiococcygeus muscle
- pubic bone
- tendinous arch of fascia surrounding obturator internus
- ishchial spine
distal attachments of levator ani and ischiococcygeus
- pubic bone
- coccyx
