Osteology and Embryology Flashcards
Ethmoid bone consists of what structures?
Crista galli
Cribriform plate and foramina
Function of crista galli
Serves as anterior attachment for falx cerebri
Sphenoid bone consists of what structures?
Lesser wing Optic canal Superior orbital fissure Sella turcica with hypophysial fossa Foramen lacerum Greater wing Foramen rotundum Foramen ovale Foramen spinosum
What goes through the optic canal?
II CN opthalmic artery (first intracranial) branch of ICA)
What structures go through the superior orbital fissure?
III CN IV CN ophthalmic div. of V CN VI CN opthalmic veins
Clinical significance of opthalmic veins anatomy.
Anterior and inferior opthalmic veins are connected to facial vein and eventually draining to cavernous sinus. Cavernous sinus communicates with veins at the base of the brain, so bacterial infection in this system of veins can be very serious.
What structure is within the hypophysial fossa?
pituitary gland
What travels through foramen lacerum?
Meningeal branches
Emissary veins from the cavernous sinus to pterygoid plexus
List structures of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone.
Foramen rotundum
Foramen ovale
Foramen spinosum
What structure travels through the foramen rotundum?
Maxillary division of V CN
What structure travels through the foramen ovale?
Mandibular division of V CN
What structure travels through the foramen spinosum?
middle meningeal artery
What structures travel through the jugular foramen?
IX, X, XI CN
What structures are transmitted through the carotid canal?
internal carotid artery (ICA)
sympathetic plexus
What structures travels through the internal acoustic meatus?
CNs VII, VIII, Labrynthine artery
