Risk factors for OA
- Overweight
- joint injury
- genetic predisposition
Joints commonly affected by osteoarthritis
Weight-bearing joints such as hips, knees and spine. Also affects fingers, thumb, neck and large toe.
Common features on medical interview n physical examination that would suggest an OA diagnosis
History: pain worse with activity, better with rest, joint gelling - stiffness after rest up to 30 min
Examination: hard n bony swelling, tenderness to palpations, joint effusion, credits, bony enlargements (osteophytes), decreased rom, joint instability, baker’s cyst
Appropriate imaging and other investigations in the assessment of patients with OA
X-ray: osteophytes; joint space narrowing; subchondral sclerosis; subchondral cysts
MRI (locking, popping, instability): cartilage damage, joint…??
