Common invasive radiological procedures Flashcards
common diagnostic invasive imaging procedures
- Biopsies
- core biopsy for histopathology
- fine needle aspiration for cytopathology - aspiration of collections
- suspected abscesses
- joint effusions
- pleural effusions (pleurocentesis)
- ascites (paracentesis)
2 categories common invasive imaging procedures can be split into
- Diagnostic
2. therapeutic aka interventional radiology
Percutaneous urinary tract interventions
- renal biopsy
- antegrade pyelogram
- nephrostomy
- suprapubic catheter insertion
Percutaneous biliary interventions
Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram
Percutaneous oncology treatments
- tumour ablation
- Transarterial cheoembolization or irradiation
Angiography - common vessels and indications
Aorta - aneurysms, dissection, stenosis Cerebral - berry aneurysms, haemorrhage Carotid - stenosis, occlusion Renal - stenosis, haemorrhage Mesenteric - haemorrhage Peripheral (limbs) - stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm Coronary - stenosis, occlusion
Preparation for invasive procedures
- right procedure?
- right modality?
- bleeding risk issues
- explanation and consent
- check renal function
- fasting if sedation needed
Common angiography based procedures
Venous access - tunnelled central lines, PICC lines
Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty - balloon dilatation of a vascular stenosis
Vascular stent - implanted metallic device for maintaining vascular lumen post angioplasty
Thrombolysis - dissolution of clot
Thrombectomy/ embolectomy - removal of clot
Atherectomy - removal of atheroma
Embolisation - occlusion of vessel using particulate matter or fine coils
