Osteoarthritis Flashcards
What is osteoarthritis?
Slowly progressive non inflammatory disorder of the synovial joints
Osteroarthritis involves the gradual loss of?
Articular cartilage with formation of honey outgrowths ( spurs or osteophytes ) at the joint margins
Notes
It’s important to note that osteoarthritis is not a part of aging process but age can play a role in getting osteoarthritis
The normally smooth white translucent articular cartilage becomes what as OA progress?
Dull and yellow and granular
What are the 3 clinical manifestations?
Joint pain
Deformity
Systemic
How does joint pain play a role?
Pain worsens with activity
Rest will usually ease it if OA is mild
Notes
Joint pain
OA develops in the intervertebral joint of the spine, local pain and stuffiness
Joint stiffness occurs after periods of rest or unchanged position
( gelling phenomenon )
Early morning stiffness is common
Crepitation
Usually affected one side of the body
How does deformity work for OA
Varus deformity means?
Valgus deformity means?
Bowlegged
Knocked knees
How does systemic play a role in OA?
What’s a huge distinction between OA and RA?
Fever
Fatigue
Organ is not involved
What are diagnostic studies for OA? (3(
X ray
CT scan
Synovial fluid analysis
How does synovial fluid analysis help determined OA from other types of inflammatory arthritis?
Because it’s
Clear yellow with little or no sign of inflammation
Notes
Interprofessional care
OA has no cure
Care is focused on managing pain and inflammation, preventing disability and maintaining and improving joint function
A comprehensive treatment plan may include education, behavior, psychological, physical and drug intervention
Drugs are thought to slow the progression of OW or support healing are known as ?
DMOADS
Disease modifying osteoarthritis drugs
What are some drugs to help OA? (2)
NSAIDs
Topical creams - capsaicin
Why do we not use corticosteroids for OA?
Because it hasten the disease process
