Osseous Tissue Or Bone Flashcards
What are long bones?
Bones longer in length than their girth.
What are the 5 functions of bones?
- Support
- Storage (Calcium, Minerals, Fat)
- Blood cell production
- Protection
- Muscle motion and power
What are short bones?
Bones that are generally box-like.
What are flat bones?
Thin bones with parallel surfaces on each side and protective in nature.
What are irregular bones?
Complex shapes.
What are sesamoid bones?
Bones that are small, flat, and seed-shaped.
What are sutural bones?
Bones that are small, flat, and irregularly shaped.
What is the Diaphysis?
The shaft, surrounded by compact bone.
What is the epiphysis and what type of bone composition is it?
The ends of bones. Cancellous or spongy.
What is the Periosteum?
Covers the outsides of bones. Has an extensive blood and nerve supply.
Where is calcium located?
Collagen fibres.
What are physical traits of calcium?
Calcium is hard, protective, and provides support or rigidness.
What is collagen made of?
Protein.
Where is collagen?
Cancellous bone.
What does Collagen do?
Collagen provides flexibility and prevents shattering of bones.
What are Osteoblasts?
Bone cell builders.
What are Osteocytes?
Mature bone cells.
What are Osteoclasts?
Bone cells that break down other bone cells. (“Grim Reapers”)
What are Osteon stacks parallel to?
The direction of force.
True or False: Cancellous bones do NOT contain blood vessels or Osteons.
True.
What 3 things are contained within the Periosteum?
- Joint Capsules
- Ligaments
- Tendons
