Osmosis and Diffusion Flashcards
What are partially permeable membranes?
Meaning some substances can pass through but others cannot.
What is Diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, down a concentration gradient.
What is Osmosis
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules from an area with a low concentration of solutes to a place with higher concentration of solutes
What is plasmolysis
this refers to the contraction or shrinkage of the protoplasm of a plant cell which is caused by the loss of water in the cell.
What is Active Transport
This is the movement of Ions or molecules IN or OUT of a cell through the cell membrane AGAINST a concentration gradient.
What is the meaning of turgid
Turgidity is the state of being turgid or swollen, especially due to high fluid content.
What is the meaning of haemolysis
breakdown or destruction of red blood cells so that the contained oxygen-carrying pigment hemoglobin is freed into the surrounding medium
What is water potential
Water potential is defined as the potential energy of water in the system to pure water when the pressure and temperature are held constant.
What is Solute potential
pressure which needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of water across a semipermeable membrane
