Articulating bones
Bones:
femur
-Tibia
-patella (non- articulating)
ligaments of knee
ligament:
-ACL
-PCL
-MCL
-LCL
-miniscus (ML)
muscle of knee
muscles that insert at the knee:
-vastus laterals
-vastus medialis
-vastus intermedius
-rectus femoris
biceps femoris
semitendinosus

insert at the head of the distal head of femur
Gastrocnemius
medial head originates at the poster medial femoral condole
lateral head originates at the posterior lateral femoral condole
Type of joint
Hinge joint
Type of movement
Flexion and Extension at the knee
mechanism of injury
The tendon that connects the patella to the growth plate of the tibia (patella tendon) pulls away causing inflammation and pain. micro tears and fractures
Predisposing factors
-lots of sport as a child
-running and jumping
-early specialisation
-growth spurt
-Quadriceps and hamstring tightness
more common in girls 8-12
boys 12-15
Treatment and Rehabilitation (stretches, exercises)
RICE:
-Rest
-Ice
-Compression
-Elevation
strengthening exercises: eg. knee extension, squats, leg lifts
or stop treatment completely
10% require surgery
