Chrondromalacia Patella Flashcards
Articulating bones
- Femur
- Patella
- Tibia
- Fibula
- Flexion and Extension
-Patellofemoral joint classified as an Arthrodial joint - gliding nature of patella on femoral condyles.
ligaments of knee
ACL - anterior cruciate ligament
PCL - posterior cruciate ligament
LCL - lateral collareral ligament.
MCL - medial collateral ligament
acl and pcl are located in the middle of the knee and maintain knee alignment, and aid landing techniques.
muscles of knee
Muscles that insert at the knee:
vastus laterals
vastus medialis
vastus intermedius
rectus femorus
Semitendinoss
semimembrinosis
bicep femoris
insert at the head of the distal head of femur
Gastrocnemius
medial head originates at the poster medial femoral condole
lateral head originates at the posterior lateral femoral condole
type of joint
hinge joint
type of movement
flexion and extension
Mechanism of injury
Theres a loss of cartilage from the posterior of the patella that cause friction between the patella and the femur. That roughens and causes swelling and pain
Predisposing factors
- Previous knee injures
particularly dislocation of knee and fractures of the patella.
-Unaligned patella
-Weak or tight muscles around the knee
-Obesity
-Running, cycling, football
-Overuse injuries
-flat feet
Rehabilitation
-hamstring strengthening
eg; dead lifts and RLD, hamstring curls with theraband,
- quadricep strenghting
Eg; plank leg raises, squats or deadlifts, Bulgarian split squats.
-Gastrocnemious strengthening
eg; calf raise variations, heal lift variations.
-Bracing and taping
-Authotics to reduce and pronation (insole)
-non-steriod anti inflamitorty medication
-RICE
