Mechanism of injury

A

due to muscles overload eg, when running - leg is fully stretched before the foot hits the ground. when the foot makes contact body weight can cause the muscle to be stretched too far and tear.

symptoms:
- sudden sharp pain in hamstring
- a snapping or popping feeling
- tenderness
- brusing

Predisposing factors

A
  • participation in sports that require running
  • prior hamstring injury
  • tired, wear or inflexible muscles
  • muscle imbalance
  • age (older)

Rehabilitation

A

exercises:
- heel dig
- hamstring curl
- hip extensions

stretching:
- hamstring wall stretch
- standing calf stretch

  • single leg balance
    -proprioceptive training

General information

A
  • grade 1 or 2 tears can heal in 3-8 weeks
  • grade 3 can heal in up to 3 months
