Osgood - Schlatter Disease Flashcards
1
Q
What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?
A
(Usually Unilateral) Inflammation at the tibial tuberosity (patella ligament insertion point) - tibial apophysitis.
2
Q
Epidemiology of Osgood-Schlatter Disease.
A
Age : 10-15 and Males.
3
Q
Pathophysiology of Osgood-Schlatter Disease (3).
A
- Traction Apophysitis - Multiple minor avulsion fractures occur where the patella ligament pulls away tiny pieces of the bone.
- Growth of Tibial Tuberosity - Osteochondrosis caused by inflammation.
4
Q
Clinical Presentation of Osgood-Schlatter Disease (3).
A
Gradual Onset :
- Visible/Palpable Hard and Tender Lump at Tibial Tuberosity.
- Pain in Anterior Knee.
- Exacerbated by Physical Activity, Kneeling/Extending Knee.
5
Q
Management of Osgood-Schlatter Disease (2).
A
- Initial - Reduce Pain and Inflammation : Rest, Ice, NSAIDs.
- Stretching + Physiotherapy to strengthen joint and improve function.
6
Q
Prognosis of Osgood-Schlatter Disease (2).
A
- Symptoms resolve fully over time but bony lump remains.
- Rare Complication : Complete Avulsion Fracture (Tibial Tuberosity separated from rest of Tibia) = Surgical Intervention.
