What is Osgood Schlatter?
Irritation of the patellar ligament at the tibial tuberosity caused by the inflammation of the epiphysis (which is the end part of the long bone)
How is it characterized?
Painful lumps just below the knee
What causes this condition?
Caused by small injuries due to repeated overuse during adolescent growth.
Who is this condition commonly seen in?
- Adolescents who play soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and who participate in gymnastics .
- Affects more boys than girls
Describe the clinical presentation of Osgood Schlatter
Knee pain occurs during activities
Symptoms often are vague and intermittent in onset.
Diagnosis of Osgood Schlatter?
A lump at the tibial tuberosity, referral for medical imaging to rule out other conditions
How would you treat Osgood Schlatter?
Soft tissue release techniques to quadriceps and the patellar tendon
Review of running, posture and gait
What causes the lump on the tibial tuberosity?
Traction apophysitis of the tibial tubercle due to repetitive strain on the secondary ossification center of the tibial tubercle
