Describe the attachments of the the LCL
On the lateral aspect of the knee, connecting the distal femur to the head of the fibula.
What typically causes LCL injuries?
A direct blow (varus stress) to the medial knee
Impact on the inside of your lower leg or knee
Placing your foot on the ground and twisting the knee
Is this condition common?
No - Quite rare
What are some signs and symptoms of LCL?
• Swelling and Tenderness
• Pain when bending or straightening your knee fully (walking)
• A feeling of Instability “knee may give way under stress”
• A Locking or Catching in the joint when it is moved
•
Why may we feel numbness or weakness in the foot after this type of injury?
It may occur if the Peroneal Nerve is stretched during the injury or is pressed by swelling in surrounding tissues
Whats tests can we do for the LCL?
Varus Stress Test - Check for joint laxity
