Describe the state of the ligament in the different grades of an MCL injury.
Grade 1 Sprains. The ligament is mildly damaged. It has been slightly stretched, but is still able to help keep the knee joint stable. Takes a few days to a week and a half to heal sufficiently for you to return to normal activities, including sports.
Grade 2 Sprains. Stretches the ligament to the point where it becomes loose. This is often referred to as a partial tear of the ligament. Can take from two to four weeks to heal.
Grade 3 Sprains. Referred to as a complete tear of the ligament. The ligament has been split into two pieces, and the knee joint is unstable. Usually takes from four to eight weeks to heal, unless it is associated with damage to the ACL, in which case the recovery time may be longer.
