What is the physis?
The growth plate in a child
What is the metaphysis?
The flare of the bone on the shaft side of the physis.
What is the diaphysis?
The shaft of the long bone. Pretty uniform diameter.
What is athroplasty?
Remodelling of a joint
What is an osteotomy?
Any cut in a bone
What is an osteosynthesis?
The fixing of a separated bone, eg after a fracture
What is an autograft?
Taking tissue from somewhere else in the patients body.
What is an allograft?
Tissue donated from another.
What is an exostectomy?
Removal of edge of bone. Shaving bone.
What is an osteophyte?
A lump of bone often surrounding an arthritic joint.
What is an arthodesis?
Fusion of a joint.
What is an arthrotomy?
Opening up a joint.
What is an arthroscopy?
Looking inside a joint.
What is a synovectomy?
Removal of the joint lining.
What is an interposition arthroplasty?
Moving a part of a joint such as a capsule lining onto the articular surface to treat arthritis.
