What are the 2 types of orthopaedic procedures and their definitions
- Elective Orthopaedic procedure is one that is planned in advance and does not need to be performed immediately. Normally for long standing conditions
- Trauma Surgery. used to treat or manage traumatic injuries.
what are the 3 types of Hip replacements and give a description?
- Total Hip Replacement - replaces the whole hip joint. consists of a femoral stem, liner cup and prosthetic femoral head
- Hemiarthroplasty - replaces only the femoral head portion (hemi=half. replaces only half the hip joint)
- Resurfacing - replaces the surfaces of the hip joint so preserves more bone compared to a THR. the heard of the femur is reshaped to allow for a metal cup to be cemented on it.
what are the 5 types of trauma surgery?
- spinal decompression (can also be elective)
- spinal fusion (can also be elective)
- open reduction internal fixation
- Dynamic Hip Screw
- External Fixation
There are 2 types of shoulder surgery, what are they?
- Total Shoulder Replacement
- Rotator Cuff Repair
what are the 2 types of shoulder replacements and what are they?
- Traditional shoulder replacement - Glenohumeral joint accessed anteriorly and the prothesis is placed on respected ends
Reverse shoulder replacement - The humeral head becomes the acetabulum and the GHJ becomes the ball.
what patients have decompression surgery?
pts who have nerve root or spinal cord compression
what are the 2 types of decompression surgery?
Disectomy - removes disc material that is extruding into the foramen
Decompression - removes osteophytes, thickened ligaments to widen the foramen
