What are the vertical organizing concepts?
- Work specialization - Division of labour
- Chain of command- specifies who reports to whom
- Span of Management/Control- numbers of employees reporting to a supervisor
- Centralization & Decentralization- authority located at the top vs. pushed downwards to all levels

- Tall Organizations have more levels and narrow span
- Flat Organizations have a wide span and fewer levels
What is departmentalization?
grouping positions into departments and
departments into the total organization
What are the departmentalization organizational strucutres?
- Vertical Functional Approach- Grouping of positions into departments based on skills (eg. finance etc)
- Divisional Approach- Grouping based on organizational output (eg electronics- finance)
What is the matrix structure/approach?
Matrix combines functional and divisional approaches to improve coordination and information. Dual lines of authority
What is the team structure/approach?
Team approach is a very widespread trend
Allows managers to delegate authority by using cross-functional teams
What is the network structure/approach?
Network structure means that the firm subcontracts most of its major functions to separate companies
