Organizational chart
Reporting structure and division of labor in an organization - each box represents different work performed
Vertical structure
Deals with issues of authority, reporting relationship and responsibility
Horizontal structure
Deals with actual structure of an organization and departmentalization
Differentiation
The idea that an organization is composed of various units, that work on varying tasks using different skills and methods
Concept of dividing work into smaller tasks and assigning to different groups in a division of labor
Integration
The extent that these areas are working together
Coordinate and have them work together so that they can achieve the mission and goals of the organization
Delegation
The assignment of new or additional responsibilities to a subordinate
Authority
The right to make decisions and tell people what to do
Hierarchy
Different authority levels in an organization
Centralized
Decisions are made at higher levels and passed down the organization
Decentralized
Decisions are made at lower levels of the organization
Functional organization
Departmentation around specialized activities such as production, marketing, and human resources
Divisional organization
Structure based on division, product, customer, or geographic area within a larger organization
Matrix organizational structure
There are two bosses
The network structure
Dynamic structure, provides a lot of flexibility it centers around a network, usually independent entities that collaborate on a project or product
Strategic alliance
A formal relationship created among independent organizations with the purpose of joint pursuit of mutual goals.
Learning organization
An organization skilled at creating, acquiring, and transferring knowledge and modifying behavior to reflect new knowledge and insight
High-involvement organization
A type of organization in which top management ensures that there is consensus about the direction in which the business is heading
Standardization
Establishing common routines and procedures that apply uniformly to everyone
Formalization
Presence of rules and regulations governing how people in the organization interact
Mechanistic organization
A form of organization that seeks to maximize internal efficiency
Organic structure
Emphasizes flexibility
“Boundaryless” organization
One in which there are no barriers to information flow
Control
Any process that direct the activities of individuals toward the achievement of organizational goals
Bureaucratic control (formal rules), Market control (Profit), clan control (culture)
