What are the elements to the new social contract?
No longer lifetime employment(belief that if we work hard a company will keep us)
- Culture hasn’t caught up with reality
- No longer work for a company for life
Organizations treat workers as independent contractors
- employed by selves, they just pay us
- don’t have to invest in benefits, overtime, workers comp
Less dedication to the worker
-investment
Longer hours and fewer benefits
What are the responses to the new social contract?
More time, more energy, and adherence to corporate norms (even though paid less, less investment)
Turning to friendship with members of the organization
Turn toward spirituality
(I need to get more from my workplace, org doesn’t have control over this)
What is org spirituality?
“Root process of reflections, questioning, and developing self and others for a good, greater than corporate survival and success” who am I? where am I going?
What are the dimension of spirituality?
Meaningful work (individual level) (custodian, connected to self and others, saw how it helped him develop as a human being, its not what you do, but how you do it.
Community (group level) “interconnected” with others. How does what we do relate to those around us?
Alignment with organizational values (organizational level) How can you spiritually align with workplace?
How can you operate from a spiritual paradigm?
Be open to change (Value system allows you to be open to change bigger than yourself)
Operate with a sense of purpose (don’t bounce from one thing to another- don’t feel grounded. Student- volunteer, girlfriend)
Understand/appreciate connection to greater whole (not just about you, how are you affecting other people?)
Embrace intuition and emotions alongside logic and rationality (feminist)
Seek win win during conflict
Engage in spiritually centered career processes (identify values for entire life and LIVE THEM)
