Organisms That Cause Disease Flashcards
What is a Pathogen?
Microorganism that cause disease
How pathogens cause disease
Goes into host body which creates a good habitat for it to live
Lives in or on the body of another organism, taking nutrition from host causing damage
About Bacteria
In kingdom Prokaryotae smaller than eukaryotes
Reproduce rapidly in host
Damages cells by releasing toxins
Where bacteria lives in plants
In plants - vascular tissue causing blackening + death
About Fungi - in animals
Lives in skin => hyphae forms a mycelium growing under skin surface => sends reproductive hyphae => releases spores + spreads
About Fungi - in plants
Lives in vascular tissue => gains nutrients => hyphae releases => extra cellular enzymes to digest tissue => causes decay
Causes decay : shrivelled leaves + black fruit
About Viruses
(1) invades cells + take over genetic machinery
(2) causes cell to make more copies of virus
(3) host cell bursts => releases virus to infect others
Protocista
Animal like
Enter host cell => feeds on contents as they grow
Bacterial diseases in Animals
TB - mostly kills lung cells
Meningitis- swells membranes around brain + spinal cord causing nerve damage
Bacteria Disease in Plants
Ring rot - ring of decay in vascular tissue in potato tuner or tomato w/ leaf wilting
Fungal diseases in Animals
Athlete’s foot - growth under skin especially in between toes causing redness + swelling
Ringworm (cattle) - spore cases erupt through skin => rashes
Fungal disease in Plants
Black sigotoka - causes spots on banana leaves reducing yield
Panama disease
Viral disease in Animals
Flu - attacks respiratory systems
HIV - attacks immune system
Others : Zika Ebola Smallpox
Viral disease in Plants
Tobacco Mosaic Virus - causes mottling + discoloured leaves
Protoctista - Disease
Malaria - parasite in blood causing headaches + fever which can cause coma + death
