Organisation of the nervous system Flashcards
What are the two systems that the mammalian nervous system is organised into and what does each consist of?
Central nervous system - brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system - all the neurones that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body
-Sensory and motor neurones
What are the two systems that the peripheral nervous nervous system is organised into and what are their functions?
Somatic nervous system - conscious control, e.g. moving a muscle
-Carries impulses to the body’s muscles
Autonomic nervous system - Subconscious control, e.g. heart rate
-Carries nerve impulses to glands, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle
What are the two systems that the autonomic nervous system is split into and what are their functions?
Parasympathetic nervous system - relaxing responses
Sympathetic nervous system - fight or flight response
What are the neurotransmitters for the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems respectively?
Noradrenaline
Acetylcholine
What is the sympathetic stimulation for the salivary glands?
Saliva production reduced
What is the sympathetic stimulation for the lungs?
Bronchial muscle relaxed
What is the sympathetic stimulation for the Kidney?
Decreased urine secretion
What is the sympathetic stimulation for the stomach?
Peristalsis reduced
What is the sympathetic stimulation for the small intestine?
Peristalsis reduced
What is the parasympathetic stimulation for the salivary glands?
Saliva production increased
What is the parasympathetic stimulation for the lungs?
Bronchial muscle contracted
What is the parasympathetic stimulation for the kidney?
Increased urine secretion
What is the parasympathetic stimulation for the stomach?
Gastric juice secreted
What is the parasympathetic stimulation for the small intestine?
Digestion increased
