Mutations Flashcards
What is a mutation?
A change in the sequence of bases in DNA
State one example of a physical mutagen
Ionizing radiation such as x-rays
What is a mutagen?
A physical, biological or chemical agent which causes a mutation
What do physical mutagens do?
Break one or both DNA strands
State one chemical mutagen
Deaminating agents
What do chemical mutagens do?
Chemically alter bases in DNA; such as converting cytosine to uracil, changing the base sequence
State three biological mutagens
Alkylating agents
Base analogs
Viruses
What do alkylating agents do?
Attaches methyl or ethyl groups to bases, resulting in the incorrect pairing of bases during replication
What do base analogues do?
They have a similar structure to one of the four bases and get incorporated in place of a base, changing the base sequence
What do viruses do?
Viral DNA may insert itself into a genome, changing the base sequence
What are the three effects of mutations?
Nonsense
Missense
Silent
