Organisation in Animals Flashcards
What are the five levels of organisation in the body?
Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organ systems → Organism
What is the function of the digestive system?
To break down food and absorb nutrients into the blood.
Where is bile made and what is its role?
Made in the liver, bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fat.
What does the pancreas produce?
Enzymes: amylase, lipase, and protease.
Where is food absorbed into the blood?
Small intestine.
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water and minerals into the blood.
Describe the pathway of air from mouth to alveoli.
Mouth → Trachea → Bronchi → Bronchioles → Alveoli
What happens in the alveoli?
Oxygen diffuses into the blood through capillaries.
What are the main components of blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, platelets.
What is the function of red blood cells?
Transport oxygen using haemoglobin.
What is the function of plasma?
Carries glucose, CO2, urea, hormones, and heat.
What is the function of platelets?
Help blood to clot at wounds.
What is the function of the heart?
To pump blood around the body.
What is the function of the coronary artery?
Supplies oxygen to the heart muscle.
What is a double circulatory system?
Blood passes through the heart twice per full circuit of the body.
What does an artery do?
Carries blood away from the heart under high pressure.
What does a vein do?
Carries blood to the heart under low pressure.
What does a capillary do?
Connects arteries and veins, allows substance exchange.
What is the function of the mouth in digestion?
Chews food and mixes it with saliva.
What does the oesophagus do?
Moves food from the mouth to the stomach.
What is the function of the stomach?
Mixes food with acid and enzymes to break it down.
What is the function of the rectum?
Stores faeces before they leave the body.
What is the role of the anus?
Where faeces are removed from the body.
What do the salivary glands produce?
They produce amylase enzyme in saliva.
