Organic evolution ch 3 Flashcards
What is anology or analogous?
organs that perform the same function in different groups but do not share a similarity of structure
what are paralagous genes?
are genes which are duplicated within a species, sort of like extra copies of a gene
what are orthologous genes?
genes that are shared between species because of shared species ancestry
what is serial homology?
used for similarities among parts of the same individual ,example similarities between neck and tail vertebrates
what is parellelism?
the evolution of similar features in lineages that are related but do not share a most recent common ancestor
what occurs in convergence?
similar features evolve in independent lineages based on different genetic or developmental processes
what is the biogenetic law?
a theory in which the stages in development of an individual recapitulate the evolutionary history of the clades to which the organism belongs to
Who proposed the biogenetic law?
Ernst Haeckel
miraculous events were responsible for the earths geological structures is known as
Catastrophism
Uniformitarianism
that the natural laws and processes function in the universe today and the rate at which they operate have not changed since the beginning of time
