Organic CHM Introduction Flashcards
In what year was the first organic compound synthesised and by who, and what compound?
In the year 1828
By a German Chemist Friedrich Wöhler
Urea
What is catenation?
Catenation isthe ability of carbon to form long chains, it can form tetravalent bonds which means that one carbon atom forms bonds with four other carbon atoms.
What is functional group?
Functional group is that part of the organic molecule responsible for its chemical behaviour or reactivity.
What is Homologus series?
Homologous series is a family of closely related organic compounds with similar chemical structure.
What are the characteristics of the homologus series..
Compounds constituting a homologous series must be.
1. Represented by a general molecular formula
2. Exhibit the same cgemica behaviour
3. Can be prepared by similar methods
4. Each member has a R.M.M of 14(CH2) greater than the preceeding compound in the series.
5. Members of any homologous series exhibit a regular graduation of physical properties.
