Q

Hydrocarbon properties change as the chain gets longer

A

The shorter the carbon chain, the more runny a hydrocarbon is - less vicious
Shorter carbon chain are also more volatile - lower boiling points
Shorter the chain more flammable.

Q

How is crude oil made?

A

Crude oil, a fossil fuel, is made over a long period of time. Formed from remains of plants and animals that died millions of years ago that were buried in mud.

8
Q

How does fractional distillation work?

A

The oil is heated until most of it has turned into gas. The gases enter a fractionating column.

9
Q

Describe the temperature gradient in a fractionating column used for fractional distillation.

A

Its hot at the bottom and gets cooler as you go up.

10
Q

Describe longer hydrocarbons.

A

Have high boiling points. They condense back into liquids and drain out the column early on, when they’re near the bottom

11
Q

Describe shorter hydrocarbons

A

Lower boiling points. They condense and drain out much later on, near to the top of the column where its cooler.

12
Q

Name some uses of crude oil.

A
  • oil provides the fuel for most modern day transport
  • petrochemical industry use some hydrocarbons from crude oil as a feedstock to make new compounds for use in things like lubricants

15
Q

Explain the different methods of cracking.

A

Thermal decomposition - breaking molecules down by heating them.
Steam cracking - vaporise them, mix them with steam and then heat them to a very high temperature.

16
Q

What bonds do Alkenes have?

A

Have a C=C Double bond

17
Q

What does a double bond mean?

A

The double bond means that alkenes have two fewer hydrogens compared with alkanes containing the same number of carbon atoms. This makes the unsaturated.

18
Q

Complete combustion

A

Alkene + oxygen = Water + carbon dioxide

19
Q

Incomplete combustion

A

Alkene + oxygen = carbon + carbon monoxide + carbon dioxide + water
