Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Organic molecules:
Always contain carbon Held together by strong covalent bonds Often large and complex in structure Generally hydrophobic Can be made by living organisms
Photosynthesis is?
CO2 + H2O + Sunlight (energy) = C6H11O6 + O2
Cellular respiration is?
Glucose + O2 = CO2 + H2O + Energy released
What is an isomer?
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structures.
Organic compounds containing only carbon to carbon single bonds are called?
Saturated organic compounds
Unsaturated organic compounds contain?
Carbon to carbon double or triple bonds
What is a hydrocarbon?
Contains only carbon and hydrogen. Alkanes, alkenes and alkynes are all hydrocarbons
Organic compounds are named according to the number of carbon atoms the contain. Name the first 6 prefixes
1 = Meth, 2 = Eth, 3 = Prop, 4 = But, 5 =Pent, 6 = Hex
What are the 5 functional group names?
Alkane, alkene, alcohol, carboxylic acid, amine
What is a functional group?
A part of a molecule that has a recognizable structure
